Comparative Analysis of Models in the Competitive Market Free Essays

Every rational individual acknowledges that businesses need to be competitive in order to thrive. My comparative analysis will recognize the various models used in the competitive marketplace and compare the end-results of these models. The four models that I will be comparing are: step checklist, transformation model, Mintzberg’s physiognomy, and the economic sector analysis. When comprehending comparative models you must first understand that a model is simply a complex or systematic description of the competitive marketplace. These models are used to aid individuals in seeing the structure or design of the marketplace. Initially, we will focus first on the transformation model and its hand in the marketplace. Looking at the general word ‘transform’ you will see how wisely chosen this process is. To transform is to create something from a raw material. In this model, this transformation occurs when inputs are transformed to outputs. This process is a very high level look at the marketplace. It looks simply at what manner of item when in to the system in order to procure a end result item. Almost like a circuit, it is the in-s and out-s which keep the market process in a continuous movement and growth. The more raw material which goes into a system the more outputs you expect to see. In my role, as a sales marketer of Aramco Oil Company I see this process every day. The raw material of oil is processed to produce a high demand product, and thus the transformation process is a never-ending cycle. As a model though, this process does not account for all the idiosyncrasies or complex factors that play a role in the create of this high end product. In fact, the process is so high leveled that I see the Step Checklist as a much more logical look at the process (Armson, Rosalind, John Martin, Susan Carr, Roger Spear, and Tony Walsh.) Of the four models being compared, the Step Checklist is by far the most organized in its structural intact and outlook on the competitive market. This checklist looks at the key influences in the competitive marketplace. It focuses on the social, technological, economic, and political influences by concisely breaking down various aspects of how, why, where, when, and what possible affects they have on an organization. Unlike the transformation model, this checklist supplies the analyzer with various possibilities to be on the lookout for when determining a course of action. Furthermore, this checklist allows for a simplistic and widely applicable usage of these factors. Whereas the transformation model was a very board look at the inputs and outputs, this Step Checklist is a systematic perspective of social factors like demographics and age-groups. By looking at the technological components of the competitive marketplace, a company like my own has the opportunity to ensure that it is staying or making advancements along with the competitive other players. Economic changes can be watched or statistically analyzed to make appropriate changes or adaptations should the competitive marketplace change. My company is a key player in the oil industry and must gauge how its future profitability will be at the best advantage. From a political avenue, this model is essential to make sure that all players in the competitive marketplace are aware of legislative policies or strategies that might affect the industry. Furthermore, politics has a constant role in policies changing or advancements. Should a sales representative like myself not account for this changes our clients will see that we are not staying in line with policies and perhaps be adversely affected by our lack of adhering to those policies. This analysis of competitors is a means towards identifying the company’s competitors, understanding what their strategies are, recognizing their objectives, seeing how their strengths and weaknesses are seen in a checklist manner, and recognizing reaction patterns to those factors which affect the marketplace (Kotler 234-247) Moving on to the Mintzberg’s physiognomy model, many analysts might see this model as highly subjective in origin. In comparison to both the Transformation and Step Checklist models, this model is dependent on looking at the power various players wield in the competitive marketplace or industry. This model stresses that there is a ‘cast of characters’ in an organization which ranges from owners to employees to special interest groups to various other entities. Based upon this model, we see a very visual representation of the marketplace. It is unique to see the differences between the models. Transformation model is seemingly a process flow. The Step Checklist was created based upon influences and logically connects or affects upon the industry. Now here we have Mintzberg’s physiognomy’s model. What stuck out at me first is that physiognomy is clearly the study of a person’s palm to determine that individual’s fate. This destiny is determined based upon a higher source of power which dictates what is to occur in the future for that individual. Here this model looks at the ‘power’ play of what will determine the fate of the company based upon the various sectors which play a role in its maintaining profitability (Armson, Rosalind, John Martin, Susan Carr, Roger Spear, and Tony Walsh.). It focuses primarily on the strategies or activities of these entities. These strategies or activities will overall affect the competitive industry in some manner. For instance, in my company should the owners fail to provide adequate compensation to the employees they can either strike or retain work elsewhere. If the company lacks adequately experienced employees it will fail to retain clients or creditability in the eyes of its public. This can potentially damage or hinder the economic profitability or continued success of Aramco Oil Company. If that occurs, as a sales marketer I will have a difficult time convincing others that the company is maintaining its correct directions and gross profit margins. At this time, I will roll right into the economic sector analysis model. The competitive marketplace is built on the ideology of ‘economics’. This fundamental model looks at sectors, the environment, and markets. Without bumping the company against its competitors we will fail to recognize where growth or change is required. The sectors themselves compete amongst themselves and there are definite signs of where one company might be affecting or causing a chain-reaction within other companies. For instance, an EDI system allows for less manual maintenance. If a company fails to make appropriate changes or does not advance itself like other, then the other companies in that particular sector will swiftly overtake its market shares. In the oil industry there is often a state of rapid growth and it is wise for a company to watch for such changes. Like the Mintzberg’s physiognomy, there is a look at the power players or influences in this model. The power look in this case is the economic sector and other players in that particular sector. All in all, measures must be taken to ensure that the marketplace is watched for its stability, and adversely if unstable occurrences are happening. These models can all be used to determine how the competitive marketplace is doing and how to identify influences that affect it. In general, these models each have their strengths and weaknesses. In general each model can be used to analyze various aspects of the marketplace. This analysis can be broken down into the strategies used to determine how the marketplace needs to react as changes occur in it and around it. In the play, a dedicated salesman Willy Loman struggles to aid his family near his retirement. Inevitably, Willy is part of Marx’s proletariat classes and lies to cheat himself into believing he is of higher class. The influence of Willy’s lies is apparent in his oldest son Biff, who is able to analyze his father’s dream and attempts to gain more in life than that of the proletariat. By accepting the materialistic ideals of Marxism, Willy Loman and his son Biff, both struggle to make ends meet and find themselves stuck in the working class. Throughout his life, Willy Loman has seen much change in his business as a salesman but ultimately is stuck in the proletariat. In the end, he cannot adapt to the effects of new technology and finally commits suicide. Willy works hard towards his retirement but falls short when his boss, Howard tells him he cannot give him an office job. Willy then stirs up a scene and shouts; â€Å"I averaged a hundred and seventy dollars a week in the year of 1928! And your father came to me-or rather, I was in the office here-it was right over this desk-and he put his hand on my shoulder† towards Howard in an attempt to get his job. The way in which Willy represents himself proves Marx’s theory of the proletariat. In this situation Willy believes he is, â€Å"responsible for creating the wealth of society,† in this case he believes he helped make the business what it is today. Willy is devastated toward Howard’s actions and is left with, â€Å"no significant savings,† and cannot provide for his family any longer. Throughout his entire life, Willy always expected more.

Family Guy Essay Example

Family Guy Paper A show about a seemingly normal family might not be a show that doesnt catch a lot of viewers attention. I have to disagree because Family Guy is one of my favourite televsion shows, and i rarely watch TV. Family Guy is comedy based off a normal middle class family, but like all families they have their problems that can be very strange. I admire shows that are different than any other shows that are out there. I find the show to be very interesting for various reasons such as their use of stereotypes,violence, and its slight case of predictibility which is why I love the Patriot Games episode. I think that Family Guy has a good portrayal of stereotypes. The stereotypes they use go along very well the character and how that character acts. They stereotype Louis as being a very typical housewife, at stay at home mom, who cooks dinner for her husband when he gets home from work. Peter is your average american male with a steady job and his own goals in life. Like in the Patriot Games he gets to live his dream of being a football player. Not all families are like that anymore because people would prefer to dine out and save the time of making food. This brings Quagmire to the stereotype table, He is a sex fiend who is always looking for someone he can have a one night stand with, but other times he can be a nice man with great advice. Then you have Stewie a not so average baby, hes rather intellegent and hates his mother. Stewie is usually the violent character like in Patriot Games Stewie beat Brian on numerous occasion. Whats TV without a little violence, which brings me to my next topic. Violence is a welcomed acceptance in our culture and it can be found every today. In every Family Guy episode that i have seen there is always some act of violence. In Patriot Games Stewie was betting on a boxing match and Brian bet fifty dollars that Mike Tyson would win. Mike Tyson ended up losing and of course Brian had to pay Stewie, but he kept putting it off. Eventually Stewie got fed up with Brian not paying him and confronted him in the bathroom. When brian didnt have the money stewie broke a glass of orange juice on Brians face. After the orange juice incident, he ripped the towel bar off the wall and beat brian with it, then he told him to have the money by five. When Brian didnt have the money you knew that brian was in for another beating, and it was very predictable. Predictibilty is good when it comes in small doses because to much predictibility can get very annoying. In the very beginning of Patriot Games they go sky diving and it was obvious that there was going to be something wrong with stewies parachute when he jumped out of the plane. If this thought ran across your mine you were very correct, when Stewie popped his parachute it said Im a homo on the inside. I was expecting the parachute not to work at all but i still let out a hearty laugh watching it. Another thing that I thought was predictable was when Brian lost the bet and took forever to pay Stewie back. I knew that he would eventually pay him back as well. Predictibility can also be thrilling if you are watching a scary movie because you know what about to happen but it still scares you anyways. Thats one of the reasons why i am a fan of the shows i watch. Everyone has different reasons why they like their favourite shows. My reason will always be the fact that i dont like shows that are like every other show out there. Also because i love shows with a great sense of humor and a great storyline like patriot games. Whether you watch shows for the information they give out or just because you think they are comical they will have elements like stereotypes, violence, predictibility and certain demographics.

Find the concentration of sucrose in a potato cell - Plan Plan For Osmosis/Plasmolysis Experiment AIM In this experiment, I am trying to find the concentration of sucrose in a potato cell. Also I can observe when a cell is totally plasmolyised. PLAN I plan to complete this experiment within an hour. Firstly, I will cut 15 potato chips, 3 each for 5 different solutions, each weighing 1.2grams, cut with a 4mm corer to approx (full word) 4cm. I will measure weight, as length is less accurate. The weight of the chip may vary as much as 0.02 g each way, which will make it a lot easier to do, but may provide me with less accurate results. I will use 5 different molar solutions of 20 cm3 each, shown to the right. 0M (water), 0.5M, 1M, 1.5M and 2M. I will create 0.5 molar solutions by mixing 10cm3 of water and 10cm3 of 1 molar solution. I will use 3 of each solution to ensure that my results are correct, and to prevent any anomalies disturbing my result graphs. One of each solution will be dropped into the solution at 10-second intervals. They will be taken out 30 minutes after precisely, to ensure a reliable result. They will then be dried on a paper towel, and quickly weighed, and recorded in a pre-written table. RELIABILITY/ FAIR TEST I must control many variables in this test. I will control the time that they are left in the solution, as this will greatly affect results if they are left in for different amounts of time. Also I must control how much I dry the chips before weighing them, because if I leave some excess water on one of them, it will be an unfair test, as ill be weighing the water as well as the chip. Another point is simple, but just to make sure that the scales I am weighing the chip on are at 0 before weighing the chip, as it may add some mass to the chip. I will use 5 different solutions, starting at 0 molar and going up in 0.5 molar concentrations. I have chosen this because they are equidistant, allowing for easy graph drawing, and also because from the preliminary experiment, I know that this will give me results that can show me the concentration of sucrose in the cells sap, and also go on to show me the concentration that the cell will plasmolyise at. Identifying the facts of the facts: Jean Safari was investigating a serious error made by a Japanese worker at a Japanese subsidiary of a US multinational company. It was founded that a component was inserted upside down and the entire batch had been pulled out of production to be reworked, thus making it a high cost for recovery. Jean had for information about the incident, and she was amazed that plant director didn’t know who it really was from the group of workers. Even the floor supervisor did not know and even if he did, he would not tell Jean or anybody else about it.It simply just shows that they are all protecting each other in the organisation. The plant manager was polite and form enough to make Jean understand that the woman who was responsible for this act was indeed very upset that she had left the factory and went back home, also she was ready to resign. A modifier is also known as an adjunct. As illustrated below, modifiers in English include adjectives, adverbs, demonstratives, possessive determiners, prepositional phrases, degree modifiers, and intensifiers.   Modifiers that appear before the head are called premodifiers, while modifiers that appear after the head are called postmodifiers. Modifiers may be either restrictive (essential to the meaning of a sentence) or nonrestrictive (additional but not essential elements in a sentence). It distinguishes Poirot from at least one other detective. Hercule Poirot is the detective whos not wearing a deerstalker hat. The clause  is restrictive. The clause is essential to know which detective Poirot is, presumably from at least one detective who is wearing a deerstalker hat. The case was  almost  solved. The degree modifier (an adverb) shows how much of the case was solved. Instead of intensifying, degree modifiers qualify by giving the degree to which something is, like someone being fairly sure of something. Wearing a deerstalker hat, the murderer was caught by Sherlock Holmes. This clause represents a misplaced modifier  because it puts the hat on the murderers head instead of Holmes. If there were no subject of the sentence (eliminating by Sherlock Holmes), the opening phrase would be a  dangling modifier. Few detectives wear deerstalker hats. Early Life Fà ¼rstenberg was born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin in Brussels, Belgium, on December 31, 1946. Her father Leon Halfin was a Moldavian emigre, and her mother Liliane Nahmias had been liberated from Auschwitz only 18 months before Dianes birth.  Both parents were Jewish. Education Fà ¼rstenberg was educated in England, Spain, and Switzerland. She studied at the University of Madrid and later transferred to the University of Geneva, where her field of study was economics. After college, Fà ¼rstenberg worked as an assistant to Albert Koshi, an agent for fashion photographers in Paris. She then moved to Italy, where she worked for textile manufacturer Angelo Ferretti and designed silk jersey dresses. New York and Independence At the University of Geneva, Fà ¼rstenberg met a German prince who was born in Switzerland, Egon zu Fà ¼rstenberg. They married in 1969 and moved to New York, where they had a high-profile society life. The princes family did not like that Fà ¼rstenberg was of Jewish heritage. Two children were born in quick succession: a son Alexandre in 1970, six months after the wedding, and a daughter Tatiana in 1971. In 1970, with the princes support and likely influenced by the rise of feminism, Fà ¼rstenberg sought financial independence by opening the Diane von Fà ¼rstenberg Studio. She designed her own prints and made easy-to-wear dresses made out of silk, cotton, and polyester knits. The Wrap Dress In 1972, Fà ¼rstenberg designed the wrap dress that was to bring her so much recognition. The dress was made of cotton jersey fabric; Furstenbergs intent was to create something both feminine-looking and easy to care for. The iconic original dress is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (alongside famous garments by Thom Browne, Rei Kawakubo, Marc Jacobs, and other designers). Fà ¼rstenberg has described her design as simple, effortless, and classic: The wrap dress is the most traditional form of dressing: Its like a robe, its like a kimono, its like a toga. By 1983, however, she had closed her cosmetics and fragrance business. Comeback From 1983 to 1990, Fà ¼rstenberg  lived in Bali and Paris. She founded a publishing company in Paris called Salvy, which released works in translation by authors such as Vita Sackville-West, Barbara Pym, and Gregor von Rezzori. In 1990, she returned to the United States, and the next year launched a new home shopping business, Silk Assets, which sold products on the cable channel QVC. Her first product did $1.2 million in sales in two hours. Selling on QVC was a success. In 1997, Fà ¼rstenberg went into business with her daughter-in-law Alexandra, re-launching her eponymous company. With the revival in the 1990s of 1970s fashions, Fà ¼rstenberg brought back the wrap dress in new prints and colors. Fà ¼rstenberg published a memoir in 1998, Diane: A Signature Life, recounting her life story and business successes. In 2001, she married businessman Barry Diller, who had been a friend since the 1970s. Fà ¼rstenberg also became involved in books and movies, producing Forty Shades of Blue, which won a prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
